Background For an Electric vehicle the estimating the cost of electricity can be difficult. After reviewing a number of YouTube videos testing various electric vehicles, I found a reasonable way to estimate electricity usage was to estimate a highway driving cost and an urban driving cost. Most of us tend to do a lot of urban driving with the occasional road trip. We need to separate urban and highway driving for two reasons. When on the highway our only choice is to use commercial recharging stations and they can be more expensive. Secondly, the faster we drive on a highway the higher the energy usage. Thus, by separating highway and urban driving we should be able to get a better estimate as to cost. |

Kilometres For the Electric Vehicle Cost Calculator, we generally want the electricity cost for the year, so the distance in kilometres is the driving for the year. Urban rate $ Enter the amount in $ you pay for electricity at home. You may be on a single rate, peak and off-peak rate, even have access to solar, so you may need to estimate. Keep in mind solar is not free. You need to work out how much your system actually produces over time and in kWh and then divide this into the cost of the solar array. Highway rate $ The cost per kWh when charging at commercial facilities can very by a large amount. Use the rate you think is reasonable. Urban % What percentage of your driving is urban driving. Normally this means we're assuming you charge at home most of the time when you're driving to and from home. The non-urban percentage is calculated and really is for when you're travelling away from home and have to pay commercial rates for electricity. Total Cost The total cost of electricity is calculated, and this is the figure we want for the Electric Vehicle Running Cost Calculator.
